Instagram

Connect an Instagram professional account so your Clone can reply to Direct Messages and post comments on your behalf. The one thing that trips most people up is a prerequisite: your Instagram has to be a Business or Creator account AND linked to a Facebook Page — a personal Facebook link is not enough. This guide covers the requirements, the Connect flow (which runs through Facebook), attaching a Clone, and what to do when your account won't appear.

The Instagram channel lets a Clone receive and reply to messages and comments sent to your Instagram Business or Creator account. It connects through Meta, and — because IcloneU uses Meta's Facebook Login for Business path — the Connect flow redirects you to Facebook to authorize, then hands you back to IcloneU. The setup itself is quick; the part that needs care is the prerequisites, because if your Instagram account isn't a professional account and linked to a Facebook Page, Meta simply won't show it during authorization. This guide walks the requirements first, then the connect, attach and troubleshooting.

The prerequisite that catches everyone

Your Instagram must be a Business or Creator account and linked to a Facebook Page (not just your Facebook profile). Linking Instagram to your personal Facebook via the Accounts Center is not enough — with only that link, the flow signs in fine but Meta reports it has no Instagram accounts linked, and nothing appears to connect. See Before you start below.

What the Instagram channel is

Instagram is a Meta product, so IcloneU connects to it the way Meta's business tools do — through Meta's Instagram Messaging API rather than a login you'd type into IcloneU directly. Once connected, your Clone works two of Instagram's surfaces:

  • Direct Messages — every DM to your account routes through Meta's webhooks into your Messages surface, including message requests from people who don't follow you or who write for the first time. Story replies and Story mentions land in DMs too, so they flow the same way.
  • Post and Reel comments — the connection also handles comments on your posts and reels, not just DMs. (The intro screen describes the connection as letting your Clone respond to comments and messages.)
  • A 24-hour DM window applies. Instagram shares Messenger's messaging policy: you can reply freely for 24 hours after a user's last message, and each new inbound resets the clock. Outside that window, free-form replies are blocked — see The 24-hour window.
  • Authentication is Meta OAuth, via Facebook. There's no password to store in IcloneU — you authorize through Meta, and IcloneU holds the resulting grant.
Facebook and Instagram are separate Connections

Connecting Instagram does not connect the Facebook Page it's linked to, and vice-versa. If you want your Clone on both, connect each channel separately — they show up as two rows on the Connections page. The Facebook Page link is only a requirement for Instagram; it isn't a Facebook Connection by itself.

Instagram is one of the channels you add from the Connections page. Once active, it shows up there as a row identified by the Instagram handle, and incoming DMs and comments appear in the Messages surface tagged with the channel.

Before you start: requirements

For your Instagram account to appear during the Connect flow, all of the following must be true. If any one is missing, your account won't be selectable — and the missing Facebook Page link is by far the most common cause.

RequirementWhy it's needed
A Business or Creator accountMeta's Messaging API only works with professional accounts. Personal accounts can't be used, regardless of follower count or verification.
Linked to a Facebook PageIcloneU uses Facebook Login for Business, so Meta discovers your Instagram through the Page. Without the Page link, it won't appear during authorization.
Admin on that Facebook PageYou sign in with the Facebook account that administers the Page. Editor / Moderator roles can't authorize the connection.
Same Business Portfolio (if you use one)If the Page is managed in a Business Portfolio (Meta Business Suite), add the Instagram account to that same portfolio so Meta groups them.
A personal Facebook link is not a Page link

This is the trap. Linking Instagram to your Facebook profile — the Meta Accounts Center link many people already have — does not satisfy the requirement. With only that link, the Connect flow signs you in but Meta reports it has no Instagram accounts linked to your Facebook, and nothing lands in your Connections grid. You need a Facebook Page. To fix it: create a Facebook Page on the same account, then open Page → Settings → Linked accounts → Instagram — your Business/Creator Instagram auto-connects (it shows as Connected, with an "Allow access to Instagram messages in Inbox" toggle that should stay on). Then re-run the IcloneU Connect flow.

Not on a professional account yet? Converting from Personal to Business or Creator is free, reversible, and takes seconds. You can do it in the Instagram mobile app or on Instagram's desktop web at instagram.com: Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account, pick Business or Creator, choose a category, and confirm. Both types work with IcloneU; the main difference is how Instagram organizes your inbox.

Newly linked? Give Meta a moment

After you first link an Instagram account to a Page, it can take Meta a little while — up to around a day in some cases — to fully recognize the link on its API side. If your account doesn't appear in the picker right after linking, wait and try the Connect flow again.

Connecting your Instagram account

With your account set up as Business or Creator and linked to a Facebook Page you administer, the connect itself takes a couple of minutes — most of it is Meta's authorization screens. The whole flow runs through Facebook and returns you to IcloneU when it's done.

  1. Start a new Instagram connection

Open Connections in the left sidebar, click New connection, and pick Instagram. An intro screen explains what's about to happen: "To connect Instagram, you'll be redirected to Facebook where you'll sign in and authorize access to your Instagram Business or Creator account." It also lists the same requirements as above — professional account, linked Page, select both, keep all permissions.

  2. Sign in with Facebook

Continue, and IcloneU redirects you to Facebook. Sign in with the Facebook account that administers the Page your Instagram is linked to. (This is the Facebook Login for Business path — that's why it's Facebook you sign in to, not Instagram.)

    Note

If you manage Pages from more than one Facebook account, make sure you're signing in with the one that's an Admin of the linked Page. Signing in with the wrong account is a common reason the Instagram account doesn't show up.

  3. Select the Facebook Page

Meta asks which Pages IcloneU can access. Check the Page that your Instagram account is linked to — this step is what lets Meta surface the Instagram account in the next screen. If you skip the linked Page here, your Instagram won't appear later.

  4. Choose the Instagram account

Meta then presents the Instagram account picker. Select the Business or Creator account that should be the inbox for this Connection. Back in IcloneU this step is labelled Instagram Account, with the note "Your account was successfully authenticated. Choose the Instagram account that you want IcloneU to connect to."

    Heads up

If the list is empty or your account is missing, the cause is almost always upstream: the account isn't Business/Creator, it isn't linked to a Facebook Page (a personal-profile link doesn't count), you didn't select that Page in the previous step, or you're signed in with the wrong Facebook account. See Troubleshooting.

  5. Review and keep all permissions

Meta shows the permissions IcloneU is requesting so it can read and respond to your comments and messages. Don't deselect any of them — IcloneU needs all of them to work. Approve to continue.

  6. Save and return to IcloneU

Confirm on Meta's side (Save, then Got it), and Meta hands you back to IcloneU's Connections page. The new Instagram Connection appears under Instagram, identified by the handle, with an active status indicator.

Attaching a Clone

Connecting the account gets messages flowing into IcloneU, but nothing auto-replies until you attach a Clone. Incoming DMs and comments will queue in Messages, unanswered, until you do this.

  1. Open the Connection's settings

On the Connections page, select the Instagram row to open its settings panel.

  2. Pick the Clone

In the Clone dropdown — "The clone that will reply on behalf of this integration." — choose who answers here. The list shows only the Clones on your account, and there's no "none" entry in the dropdown — so pick the Clone that should reply, then Save.

    Heads up

On a fresh connect the dropdown may auto-select a Clone, but closing the panel with Cancel discards it. Click Save to make the assignment stick.

  3. Set comment behaviour (optional)

Because Instagram is a comment channel, its panel includes a Post options section — "Control how AI replies handle your public posts and comments." — and a Response authorizations section. Response authorizations apply to post comments only: tick a category and the Clone's reply in it is held for your approval before going out; DMs are always answered immediately regardless.

  4. Mute keywords another tool handles (optional)

The same panel has a Muted comment keywords field — "Comments that contain one of these get no AI reply — neither public nor DM." Any comment matching a keyword here gets no AI reply — though your own automations still run if one is triggered by the same keyword — with a companion field to carve out exceptions. This is the built-in remedy for running a second automation tool on the same account (see the warning below): mute the keywords you want the other tool to own so the two Clones don't both fire on the same comment.

    Note

The muted-keywords match is case-insensitive "contains", and the exclude field wins — a comment that also contains an excluded word replies normally. Muting applies to comments, not DMs.

  5. Confirm the AI identifier is on your profile

Instagram is a comment channel, so the panel shows a mandatory AI identifier ✨ confirmation card — "Confirm the AI identifier is visible on this profile before enabling the Clone." Tick "I have added the ✨ AI identifier and disclosure to this profile." to confirm you've disclosed on Instagram that an AI answers here. On an enabled Connection Save stays disabled until this box is ticked, and the panel shows the hint "Required before enabling this integration." Once you tick it and Save, the hint changes to "Confirmed on {date}."

    Note

This confirmation is required only on the post-capable channels — Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. It doesn't apply to WhatsApp, Telegram, Email or Web chat.

  6. Confirm Enabled is on

The Enabled toggle at the top of the panel controls whether the Connection handles anything at all — "When off, incoming messages and comments for this account are ignored. Tokens are kept so you can re-enable without reconnecting." Leave it on so the Clone replies. (With Enabled on, Save won't work until the AI-identifier box above is ticked.)

Running ManyChat (or any second tool) on the same account?

The Connect intro screen calls this out directly: if another app — ManyChat is the example it names — is also connected to the same Instagram account, Meta delivers the same comments and messages to both apps, so both may reply and you get duplicate or conflicting responses. IcloneU's recommendation is to automate each account with only one tool. If you must run both, open this Connection's Settings and use Muted comment keywords so IcloneU stays silent on the keywords you want the other tool to handle. (Note this covers comments, not the DM overlap — for DMs, the one-tool-per-account rule is the only clean fix.)

For the full attach-and-enable walkthrough — including how one Clone can cover several channels at once — see Assigning a Clone to a platform.

The 24-hour window

Instagram DMs follow Meta's standard messaging policy — the same one Facebook Messenger uses. You (and your Clone on your behalf) can reply freely for 24 hours after the user's last message. Every new inbound from that user — including a tap on a quick-reply button — resets the window to a fresh 24 hours.

Once the window closes, free-form replies are blocked by Meta's API, and only Meta's defined outside-window paths remain: the HUMAN_AGENT tag (a human can reply up to 7 days after the user's last message), Utility Messages (templated transactional notifications), and the Marketing Messages API (opt-in promotional re-engagement, which is not available in the EU). These are shared with the Facebook channel, so the policy detail lives in that module.

A closed window looks like "the Clone went quiet"

If a DM came in more than 24 hours ago and the Clone didn't reply, the window is the first thing to check — the inbound will be visible in Messages but the outbound is blocked. It's not a bug; it's Meta's policy. Newer conversations (inside 24h) reply normally.

How much can it send?

Instagram's messaging limits are set by Meta and counted per Instagram professional account (so multiple connected accounts each get their own budget). Meta's documented limits are expressed per second — roughly 2 API calls/second general, with higher per-second allowances for text and reactions — plus a documented 750 per hour limit specifically for private replies to comments on posts and reels. Inbound DMs from users are not rate-limited; you just can't answer faster than the outbound limits allow.

About the "200 DMs/hour" figure

You'll see a widely-cited 200 automated DMs per hour number floating around for Instagram. It's worth being precise: that figure is a pacing convention that third-party automation tools converged on after Meta's late-2024 anti-spam tightening — it is not a cap Meta publishes in its rate-limit documentation. Treat ~200/hour as prudent operating guidance for high-volume outbound, not a hard Meta-imposed ceiling. The binding documented constraints are Meta's per-second limits, the 750/hour comment-reply limit, and the 24-hour window.

In practice this means Instagram is well-suited to steady customer support and conversational reply — most accounts never approach these limits. It's a poor fit for high-volume promotional blasts to many users at once.

Disconnecting Instagram

To remove an Instagram Connection, select its row on the Connections page and click Remove in the toolbar, then confirm. By default this disconnects the account and deletes only its settings — your conversation and post history is preserved and reattaches automatically if you reconnect the same account later. After disconnect, IcloneU stops receiving DMs and comments for that account and the attached Clone stops replying. Instagram itself is untouched — messages keep arriving in your Instagram inbox, and you can still use the account normally.

Remove keeps your history by default

The Remove dialog explains that removing the connection disconnects the account and deletes its settings, while your conversation and post history is preserved and will reattach automatically if you reconnect the same account later. Permanent deletion is opt-in: only if you tick the optional "Also permanently delete all conversation and post history for this account" checkbox does the dialog add a "⚠️ This action cannot be undone." warning. Take the export-first precaution only when you choose that permanent-delete path — review or export anything you need from the Messages surface before ticking that box. Either way, your Instagram account keeps its own copies of the DMs.

One thing Remove doesn't do: revoke Meta's side of the authorization. Because IcloneU uses Facebook Login for Business, the OAuth grant lives on the Facebook side and stays on file (which makes a later reconnect quicker). To revoke it explicitly — for a security teardown, say — go to Facebook Settings → Business integrations → IcloneU → Remove.

Troubleshooting

The two problems that come up most are: your Instagram account doesn't appear during the Connect flow, or the Clone stops replying after it was working. Work them in this order.

My Instagram account doesn't appear in the picker. This is almost always a setup issue upstream of IcloneU. Check, in order:

  • It's not a professional account — confirm it's Business or Creator (Instagram Settings → Account type and tools). A Personal account will never appear.
  • It's not linked to a Facebook Page — the big one. A link to your Facebook profile (Accounts Center) doesn't count; it must be a Page. Fix via Page → Settings → Linked accounts → Instagram, then keep the messages-in-Inbox toggle on.
  • You didn't select the linked Page during the "choose Pages" step — reconnect and be sure to check both the Page and the Instagram account.
  • Wrong Facebook account — sign in with the account that's an Admin of the linked Page.
  • The Page is in a Business Portfolio the Instagram account isn't part of — add the Instagram account to the same portfolio in Meta Business Suite.
  • You linked it very recently — Meta can take a while to recognize a new link; wait and retry.

The Clone stopped replying. Open the conversation in the Messages surface: if the inbound DM is there but no reply went out, it's a window, Clone-attachment, or configuration issue; if the inbound never appears, it's a delivery issue.

  • The 24-hour window closed — the most common cause. If the user's last message was over 24 hours ago, free-form replies are blocked (see The 24-hour window).
  • The account was switched back to Personal — a silent break. Reverting to a Personal account cuts off the Messaging API; switch it back to Business/Creator and reconnect.
  • No Clone is attached, or Enabled is off — open the Connection's settings, confirm a Clone is selected and Save was clicked, and that the Enabled toggle is on.
  • The Clone's Knowledge is set to refuse — "Answer from library only" with no matching content, or a very strict lookup on a small library, can leave inbounds unanswered.
  • High outbound volume — if the Clone has been replying to a large burst, some outbound may be pacing against Meta's per-second limits (see How much can it send?).

For the full cross-channel version of these checks, see Social media connection issues and My AI Clone isn't responding.

Frequently asked

Yes. IcloneU connects Instagram through Facebook Login for Business, so your Business/Creator account must be linked to a Facebook Page you administer — a link to your Facebook profile (Accounts Center) isn't enough. Without the Page link, your Instagram account won't appear during authorization.

Yes — the Instagram connection handles both post/reel comments and Direct Messages. DMs are always answered immediately; comment replies can be held for your approval per category via the Response authorizations section on the Connection's settings panel.

Yes. IcloneU receives all inbound DMs Instagram delivers a webhook for — including message requests from non-followers and first-time senders. A first DM from someone who doesn't follow you reaches your Clone like any other.

Yes — create one Connection per account (each needs its own Business/Creator setup and Page link). You can attach the same Clone to each, or a different Clone per account. The total number of Connections is bounded by your plan.

Both work with IcloneU. The practical difference is inbox organization: Creator accounts split DMs into Primary / General / Requests, while Business accounts use a simpler inbox. That split doesn't gate IcloneU — it still receives all inbound DMs either way. Pick whichever matches how you present the account (Business for brands/organizations, Creator for individual creators).

Post and Reel comments, Story replies and Story-mention DMs all flow through. Two nuances are open for confirmation: whether the Clone receives the full Story-mention context (versus just the inbound text), and whether real-time Live-stream comments are delivered at all — that depends on whether Instagram's API emits a webhook for them. Treat Live comments as unverified until you've tested your own account.
