The Facebook channel lets a Clone receive and reply to both Messenger messages and comments on your Page's posts — one Connection covers both. It authenticates through Meta's OAuth: you sign in to Facebook, pick the Page you administer, and approve the permissions IcloneU needs. There's no token to paste and no server settings — Meta hands IcloneU a Page access token at the end of the flow. The one prerequisite that catches people out is that Messenger's business API works with a Facebook Page, never a personal profile, and only a Page Admin can connect it.
Meta's Messenger Platform only works with a Facebook Page — a personal profile can't be connected. You also need the Admin role on that Page; Editor, Moderator, Advertiser and Analyst roles can't authorize a third-party app. If you don't have a Page yet, create one at facebook.com/pages/create before you start. See Requirements below.
What the Facebook channel is
Facebook Messenger is Meta's consumer messaging product; the business side runs on the Messenger Platform, which lets approved apps like IcloneU send and receive messages on behalf of a Facebook Page. When you connect, IcloneU subscribes to Meta's webhooks for that Page, so two kinds of activity flow into IcloneU:
- Messenger DMs — private messages a customer sends to your Page. Your Clone reads them, retrieves from its Knowledge library, and replies — subject to the 24-hour window (below) and to the Direct-message review mode you choose in the Connection's settings.
- Page-post comments — public comments on your Page's posts. The Clone can reply to these too; comment handling is governed by the Post options section of the Connection's settings, with held-vs-auto behavior gated by the comment-related Response authorizations. Comments appear in Post replies, not in Messages.
- One channel, both surfaces. You don't set up comments and DMs separately — a single Facebook Connection covers both. (Under the hood they're different Meta webhook events, but from your side it's one channel.)
When a customer sends your Page a photo, a document or a video on Messenger, IcloneU keeps the first one in each message and shows it in Messages, with any text they typed alongside. Your Clone can't see what's inside a file, so it follows what your Clone's instructions say about files, photos or receipts — worth adding a line, for example on what to do with a payment receipt — and otherwise it acknowledges the file and asks the customer to confirm the key details in text, in their language.
Even though both authenticate through Meta, Facebook and Instagram are two separate Connections in IcloneU — each has its own row, its own Clone attachment, and each counts as one of the Connections your plan includes. The convenience is that if you're already signed in to Meta from connecting one, connecting the other often shortcuts some OAuth screens. See Connecting Instagram.
You add Facebook from the Connections page. Once active, it shows up there as a row identified by the Page name, and incoming Messenger messages appear in the Messages surface tagged with the channel, while comments appear in Post replies.
Requirements
Before you start the Connect flow, make sure all four of these are true. Most failed connects trace back to a missing one:
| Requirement | Why it's needed |
|---|---|
| A Facebook Page | Meta's Messenger Platform only messages Pages, never personal profiles. No Page = nothing to connect. Create one at facebook.com/pages/create. |
| Admin role on that Page | Only the Admin role can grant messaging permissions to a third-party app. Editor, Moderator, Advertiser and Analyst can't. |
| The Facebook account that administers the Page | Pages are owned by personal accounts. Sign in with the personal account that has Admin on the Page you want. |
| Connections on your plan | Each Facebook Page is one Connection. Your plan includes a set number of Connections, shared across all channels. |
Business Verification and Advanced Access on pages_messaging are IcloneU's platform-side responsibility, not yours — that's what makes customer-facing Clone replies work in production. You just need a Page you're an Admin of.
Not an Admin? Ask an existing Page Admin to add you (Facebook → Page → Settings → Page roles → Add person → Admin — the change needs their own Facebook session to confirm), or have that Admin run the Connect flow. If the Admin connects, the Connection lives in your IcloneU account but the OAuth grant traces to their Facebook account, so a future reconnect needs that same Admin again.
Connecting a Page
With a Page you administer, the whole thing takes 5–15 minutes — most of it inside Meta's OAuth screens, which are largely outside IcloneU's control. IcloneU starts the flow, Meta handles login, Page selection and permissions, then hands you back to IcloneU, where you click Connect on the Page to create the Connection.
Start a new Facebook connection
Open Connections in the left sidebar, click New connection, and pick Facebook. A short intro screen explains that you'll be redirected to Meta and reminds you that you must be an admin of the Page. Click through to start the redirect.
Sign in with Facebook
Meta opens its login flow. Sign in with the personal Facebook account that administers the Page you want to connect.
TipIf you're already logged in to Facebook in this browser, Meta may skip the login screen and go straight to Page selection or permissions.
Pick the Page to connect
Meta shows a Page picker listing every Page your account administers. Select the Page that should be the Messenger inbox for this Connection.
Heads upIf the list is empty, your account isn't an Admin on any Page — you either need to create a Page at facebook.com/pages/create or have an existing Admin add you with the Admin role. Editor / Moderator / Advertiser / Analyst Pages won't appear.
Select your Business Portfolios (if asked)
If your Pages are managed through a Business Portfolio (Meta Business Suite), Meta also asks which Businesses IcloneU can access. Tick every Business Portfolio that owns Pages you want, or choose the opt-in-to-all option.
Heads upA Business you leave unticked stays invisible to IcloneU — even for Pages you're an Admin of and selected in the previous step. If a Page you expected is missing later, an unticked Business is the usual reason.
Review and keep all permissions
Meta lists what IcloneU is requesting — the core one is pages_messaging (send and receive Messenger messages for the Page), plus pages_read_engagement (to read your Page's posts and comments) and pages_manage_metadata (to subscribe to the Page's webhooks). Do not toggle any off, then approve.
NoteMeta lets you switch individual permissions off, but IcloneU needs all of them to read and respond to comments and messages. Turning off pages_messaging in particular stops Clone replies entirely.
Return to IcloneU and connect the Page
After Meta's flow finishes, you're back in IcloneU on a page that reads "Your account was successfully authenticated. Choose the Facebook pages that you want IcloneU to connect to." and lists your Pages, each with a Connect button. Click Connect on the Page you want: the Connection is created and its settings panel opens straight away. On the Connections page it's identified by the Page name and reads Disabled until you save that panel with the AI identifier ✨ confirmation on — see the next section.
If another app (such as ManyChat) is also connected to the same Page, Meta delivers the same comments and messages to both apps — so both may reply, causing duplicate or conflicting responses. Automate each Page with one tool. If you must run both, open this Connection's Settings and use Muted comment keywords so IcloneU stays silent on the keywords the other tool should handle.
To connect several Pages, run this flow once per Page — each becomes its own Connection identified by its Page name. If you administer multiple Pages on one Facebook account, you won't have to log in again each time; you just pick the next Page in Meta's picker.
Attaching a Clone and enabling
A new Facebook Connection already has your account's oldest Clone attached, but it starts switched off: until you save this panel with the AI identifier ✨ confirmation on, it reads Disabled and ignores every message and comment, which on Facebook are lost for good. The panel opens by itself right after you connect; to reopen it later, select the Connection's row on the Connections page and click Settings. Work through it:
Pick the Clone
Choose the Clone from the Clone dropdown — "The clone that will reply on behalf of this integration." This is the persona and Knowledge library that answers on this Page. Connecting already attached your account's oldest Clone; change it only if another Clone should answer here.
Confirm the Connection is Enabled
The Enabled toggle controls whether the Connection is live: "When off, incoming messages and comments for this account are ignored. Tokens are kept so you can re-enable without reconnecting." In the panel that opens right after connecting it already shows on, but that isn't saved until the Save step below; if you reopened the panel later, switch it on. Leave it on — messages that arrive while it's off are lost for good on Facebook (see the per-channel breakdown).
Set Response authorizations
Under Response authorizations required for, tick the response types that should wait for your approval (Answers, Thanks, Content moderation, Outside scope, and so on); unticked types are sent automatically. These let you scope what the Clone handles automatically versus what it leaves for you. These authorizations always gate post-comment replies. Below the chips, the Direct-message review control decides how Messenger DM replies that match the ticked types are handled: Send immediately (the default — DMs go out with no review), Hold until approved (the reply waits in Messages until you approve or cancel it), or Auto-send after a delay (the reply sends itself after the minutes you set unless you approve, edit or cancel it first). For the delay mode a minutes box appears (5–240, default 30) — "Minutes before the reply sends automatically. You can approve, edit or cancel it during this time." — and while parked the reply shows an amber In review pill with its send time; if the customer writes again first, the parked reply is cancelled and folded into the regenerated answer. On Facebook the delay mode can't miss the 24-hour window — a missed review costs the review, never the delivery.
Set Post options (comments)
The Post options section — "Control how AI replies handle your public posts and comments." — governs the comment side: whether New posts generate responses automatically, whether to Limit which posts I respond to, and related comment behavior. This section is why one Facebook Connection can cover both DMs and comments.
TipRunning another comment tool on this Page? Add its trigger words under Muted comment keywords: "Comments that contain one of these get no AI reply — neither public nor DM." Press Enter after each keyword.
Confirm the AI identifier
Facebook is a post-capable channel, so the panel shows a required AI identifier ✨ card: "Confirm the AI identifier is visible on this profile before enabling the Clone." Switch on its confirmation — "I have added the ✨ AI identifier and disclosure to this profile." — to confirm you've added the AI identifier and disclosure to this Page. While the connection is Enabled and the confirmation is off, Save stays disabled and the card shows the hint "Required before enabling this integration." Once you switch it on and save, the card instead reads "Confirmed on {date}."
Heads upOn Facebook, Instagram and YouTube this confirmation is mandatory — with the connection Enabled, you can't Save until it's switched on. WhatsApp, Telegram, Email and Web chat don't show this card.
Save
Click Save. With the connection Enabled, Save only goes through once the AI identifier ✨ confirmation above is switched on. The settings then persist — customer DMs and comments start getting answered by the Clone. On a new Connection this is the Save that switches it on; close the panel with Cancel or × instead and it stays Disabled. The response authorizations you set always gate post-comment replies; Messenger DMs follow the Direct-message review mode you picked — with Send immediately they are answered right away.
Facebook and Instagram connections carry one card the other channels don't: Conversation starters — "Up to 4 question chips Meta shows before a person's first message. Leave all empty to remove them." Up to four questions, 80 characters each. Someone who taps one sends it as an ordinary message, so your keyword triggers and the Clone answer it with nothing else to build. Save pushes them to Meta before storing them, so if Meta refuses, both sides keep the questions they had. Detail in Connecting your first social account.
For the full walk-through of attaching a Clone, response authorizations and reply timing across every channel, see Assigning a Clone to a platform.
Send a Messenger message to your Page from a different Facebook profile — not the admin account you connected with. Admin-to-own-Page messages don't exercise the same flow a customer experiences. A real customer's test message (and the Clone's reply) should appear in Messages within seconds.
The 24-hour messaging window
This is the single biggest gotcha on Facebook, and it's Meta's rule, not IcloneU's. Messenger has a 24-hour standard messaging window: the clock starts from the last message the customer sent to your Page, and each new inbound from them resets it to a fresh 24 hours. Inside the window, your Clone replies freely. Outside it, Meta's Send API rejects free-form replies with a policy error — so a Clone that answered fine yesterday can go silent on an old thread today.
- Per-customer, per-Page. Each customer-Page pair has its own window. One customer messaging you doesn't open the window for anyone else.
- Only the customer's message opens or resets it. Sending an outbound doesn't extend the window — only a fresh inbound from the customer does.
- Absolute UTC elapsed time. It's 24 hours of real time, not a calendar-day boundary; time zones are irrelevant.
- Comments aren't subject to the 24-hour window. The window governs Messenger DMs. Public post comments follow the Post-options rules instead.
With Hold until approved on, a held Messenger reply shows an amber hourglass pill reading "approve before 9:15 AM" in the thread; if you don't approve before the window closes, IcloneU marks it Undeliverable — it can no longer be sent, matching the warning shown in the connection settings: "This platform only allows replies within 24 hours of the customer's last message. A reply that isn't approved in time expires and can no longer be sent." Auto-send after a delay avoids this: the reply sends itself within minutes.
To reach a customer after the window closes, Meta defines three paths — and one of them changed in 2026 (see the callout). IcloneU doesn't send any of them: every reply it sends into a Messenger conversation, whether your Clone's, one you type after taking over the conversation, or a workflow's, is a standard reply, which Meta only delivers within 24 hours of the customer's last message. Meta's three paths, for reference:
- HUMAN_AGENT tag — extends to 7 days after the customer's last message, but only for messages handled by an actual human agent, not an automated Clone reply. IcloneU doesn't send this tag, so a reply you type after taking over gets the same 24 hours as the Clone's.
- Utility Messages — templated, transactional notifications (order updates, account changes, event reminders). You author a template, Meta approves it for a category, you send within that category. Similar in spirit to WhatsApp templates.
- Marketing Messages API — opt-in promotional re-engagement; the customer must have explicitly opted in. Meta enforces frequency and unsubscribe controls. Not available in the EU.
Meta deprecated three of the four legacy Messenger message tags — CONFIRMED_EVENT_UPDATE, ACCOUNT_UPDATE and POST_PURCHASE_UPDATE now return an error and no longer send. Only HUMAN_AGENT still works. If any older setup sent under the deprecated tags, it's been failing since that date; the replacements are Utility Messages and the Marketing Messages API. The 24-hour window itself is unchanged — only the outside-window paths shifted.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose from the Messages surface first: if the customer's inbound message appears there but no reply went out, it's a Clone-side or window issue — unless a workflow answered it: when a message starts a workflow or answers one that's waiting for a reply, Messages shows the customer's message but not the workflow's replies, which don't appear there today. If the inbound never appears at all, the Connection is switched off or has no Clone, or it's a webhook-side (delivery) issue. That one split tells you which half of the list to work through.
The Clone isn't replying, but the message arrived. Walk these in order:
- The reply is waiting for review. If Direct-message review is set to Hold until approved or Auto-send after a delay, the reply is sitting in the Messages thread waiting for you — approve it there (or let the delay elapse). A held reply shows the amber "approve before ..." pill; a parked one shows In review with its send time.
- The 24-hour window closed. Check the customer's last inbound timestamp. More than 24 hours ago means Meta refuses any reply from IcloneU — the Clone's or yours — until the customer writes again: IcloneU doesn't send the HUMAN_AGENT tag, Utility Messages or the Marketing Messages API. If you take over such a conversation, Messages warns you above the reply box, and a reply you send anyway shows Not delivered.
- Knowledge library is set to refuse. If "Answer from library only" is on and the library has no matching content, or lookup strictness is too tight on a small library, the Clone stays silent by design. Try Balanced strictness.
- The comment is muted. If it's a comment, check Muted comment keywords in the Connection settings — a matching keyword means no AI reply and no AI DM, on purpose — your own automations still run.
- The send failed with a deprecated tag. A failed outbound referencing CONFIRMED_EVENT_UPDATE / ACCOUNT_UPDATE / POST_PURCHASE_UPDATE comes from a setup that still uses a tag Meta retired on 2026-04-27 (IcloneU's own replies never carry a tag): remove the tag from that setup — IcloneU doesn't send the Utility Messages that replaced them (see the window section).
Customer messages never reach IcloneU. The inbound doesn't show in Messages at all — rule out a switched-off Connection first, then the webhook side:
- The Connection is switched off or has no Clone. If its row on the Connections page reads Disabled or No Clone, nothing that arrives on the Page is stored or answered by the Clone — and a new Facebook Connection stays Disabled until you save its panel with the AI identifier ✨ confirmation on. Open Settings, pick a Clone if there is none, switch Enabled on, switch on the confirmation and click Save. What arrived in the meantime is gone for good.
- Confirm they messaged the right Page. Customers sometimes message a similarly-named Page. Have them confirm it matches your Connection's Page name.
- Check the message reached Meta. Open the Page in Meta Business Suite → Inbox. If recent customer messages appear there but not in IcloneU, the webhook subscription is broken — disconnect and reconnect the Connection to force Meta to re-establish it.
- Confirm IcloneU is still authorized. Facebook → Settings → Business integrations. If IcloneU is missing from the list, the OAuth grant was revoked — reconnect via the Connect flow.
- Check for Meta-side enforcement. Meta restricts business messaging on Pages with policy violations or unresolved verification gaps. Check the Page's status in Business Suite; while restricted, no third-party app — including IcloneU — can receive its messages.
- Give it a few minutes. Meta occasionally has webhook delivery lag (minutes to hours). If nothing else surfaces a cause, wait 15 minutes and retest.
A Facebook Page access token can go stale — the granting Admin changed their password, lost their Page role, or Meta revoked it after a policy event. If the Connection shows Reconnect required, select its row and click Reconnect in the toolbar, then re-approve the same Page and permissions in Meta's flow. Reconnecting keeps the attached Clone, so you don't re-attach it. Pick the same Page — picking a different one creates a different Connection. The same pill also appears when Meta reports that the Page itself is out of reach — deleted, or no longer shared with IcloneU — even while the token still works; hover the red marker on the Page's picture to read "This account is no longer available on the platform. It may have been deleted, or its access to IcloneU may have been removed. Reconnect the connection to restore it." Reconnect and select that Page in Meta's flow; if the Page was deleted, reconnecting can't bring it back: remove that Page's Connection, then Reconnect any other Page that still shows the pill.
Worked through all of the above and a fresh test message from a non-admin profile still doesn't arrive? Escalate to support with the Page name and Page ID, the test profile that messaged, the timestamp of a message that didn't arrive, and screenshots of the Connections page, the Business Suite Inbox (showing it arrived at Meta), and the IcloneU Messages surface (showing the absence).
Disconnecting a Page
To remove a Facebook Connection, select its row on the Connections page and click Remove, then confirm. IcloneU removes the Page's webhook subscription, so new customer Messenger messages stop arriving in Messages and the attached Clone stops replying on that Page. The Clone itself, its Knowledge library, and any other Connections attached to it are unaffected. Your Page's own Messenger inbox at Meta is untouched — customers can still message the Page and Meta still delivers to the Page's inbox in Business Suite; the messages just don't reach IcloneU.
The Remove dialog disconnects the Page and deletes its settings, while your conversation and post history is preserved and reattaches automatically if you reconnect the same Page later. Permanent deletion is opt-in: only the separate checkbox — off by default — makes removal destructive, and only then does the dialog warn it cannot be undone. The preserved history stays visible in Messages while the connection is out — a conversation belongs to your account through the Clone that handled it, not through the connection, so removing the connection detaches it without hiding it. The one thing that does hide it is the account filter at the top of Messages: a detached conversation belongs to no account, so narrowing the list to specific accounts leaves it out.
Removing the Connection in IcloneU does not revoke Meta's OAuth grant — it stays on file so a future Reconnect runs with fewer prompts. To revoke it explicitly (for a security disconnect), go to Facebook → Settings → Business integrations → find IcloneU → Remove. After an explicit revoke, the next Connect flow re-prompts for all permissions.
Frequently asked
No, you need a Page. Meta's Messenger Platform only allows business-API access to Facebook Pages, never personal profiles — this is Meta's rule, not IcloneU's. If you only have a personal account, create a Page at facebook.com/pages/create first (a Page is owned by a personal account, so you keep both).
Yes — one Facebook Connection per Page. Run the Connect flow once per Page; each becomes its own row identified by Page name, and you can attach the same Clone to several Pages or a different Clone to each. Each Page is one of the Connections your plan includes; nothing Facebook-specific limits the number.
No. Facebook and Instagram are separate Connections even though both authenticate through Meta. Connect each channel on its own; each counts as one of the Connections your plan includes. If you're already signed in to Meta from one, connecting the other often shortcuts some OAuth screens. See Connecting Instagram.
Almost certainly the 24-hour window. Messenger blocks free-form replies more than 24 hours after the customer's last message. The Clone answers active threads fine but can't reply to a customer who went quiet over a day ago — and neither can you from Messages: IcloneU sends only standard replies (no HUMAN_AGENT tag, Utility Messages or Marketing Messages API), so the customer has to write again first.
No. IcloneU requests only the messaging-and-comments permissions (pages_messaging, plus pages_read_engagement to read your Page's posts and comments and pages_manage_metadata to subscribe to webhooks). It can't post to your Page on your behalf (that's a different permission scope), can't touch ad accounts or ad spend, and can't see your friends, photos, or non-Page content.
No — you don't. Business Verification and Advanced Access on pages_messaging are handled on the IcloneU platform side (that's what lets Clones message real customers in production). All you need is a Page you're an Admin of.
